About MEACO
MEACO is one of the four supranational organizations recognized by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), representing the national and sub regional ophthalmological societies in Africa and the Middle East including Turkey and Iran.
History
Established in 1988, all the national ophthalmological societies of the Arab countries came together to form the Pan Arab Council of Ophthalmology (PACO), under the leadership of HRH Prince Abdulaziz Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Saud and Dr. Akef El-Maghraby. Their aim was to unite ophthalmologists and ophthalmic societies throughout the Middle East and Africa to improve and enhance their skills and knowledge.
Later in 1997, the board unanimously decided to merge the Council with the Afro-Arab Society of Ophthalmology and as a result, the Council was renamed as Pan Arab Africa Council of Ophthalmology (PAACO).
In 2005, the Iranian Ophthalmological Society, which has more than 1,200 members, formally joined the PAACO, which resulted in the renaming of the council to the Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO). In 2006, the Turkish Ophthalmology Society also joined the Council.
