  • AAO-MEACO Joint Meeting

    MEACO honors three distinguished personalities

    At the opening session of the Joint Meeting, MEACO will be honoring 3 distinguished personalities for their significant contribution to ophthalmology in the Middle East and Africa region and the world over.

    Victoria Sheffield, President of International Eye Foundation, will be presented with the Prince Abdulaziz Ahmad Al Saud Prevention of Blindness Award for her substantial contribution to the Global fight against Blindness and Visual Disability. Over a period of 38 years, she has worked across all regions of the world developing, executing eye care programs, providing training and conducting several researches.

    Theo Seiler, MD Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Zurich in Switzerland will receive the El-Maghraby International Award for his contribution towards the international advancement and innovation in ophthalmology. He is credited as being the first physician to use an excimer laser on the human eye.

    Hannah Faal, MD Program Development Adviser on health systems for Sightsavers International will receive the MEACO Distinction Award for her major impact on the education and development of ophthalmology in the Middle East and Africa Region. She has worked in prevention of blindness, establishment of eye care programs, health system strengthening and human resources development for eye health, mainly in Africa.

    MEACO organizes Prevention of Blindness, Residency Training and Eye Bank Sessions during AAO/MEACO Joint Meeting

    In addition to various symposia and courses jointly organized by MEACO during the AAO- MEACO Joint Meeting, there are 3 additional sessions which MEACO is organizing. These are; "Ophthalmology Residency Programs in the MEACO Region: Challenges and Prospects" scheduled for Saturday, October 16 at 2:00 p.m., "Eye Banking Development Session" scheduled for Sunday, October 17 at 8:30 a.m. and the "Comprehensive Eye Care: The Second Decade of VISION 2020" which is scheduled for Monday, October 18 at 3:45 p.m. For more details, please click here.

    Joint Meeting Highlights and Resources

    The AAO-MEACO Joint Meeting will be this year’s largest ophthalmic meeting. Such a large meeting might be difficult to navigate, but there are tools available to help attendees make the most of their time in Chicago.

    The 20th Annual Meeting of Iranian Society of Ophthalmology
    Tehran, Iran, November 29 - December 2, 2010

    The Iranian Society of Ophthalmology is organizing its 20th Annual Meeting from November 29 - December 2, 2010 at Aboreyhan International Conference Center, Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran.     Chairman of MEACO Prevention of Blindness Committee, Dr. Ahmed Trabelsi, wins the G.B Biette International Award

    Dr. Ahmed Trabelsi the Chairman of MEACO Prevention of Blindness Committee, who is also the President of Nadi Al Bassar (Tunisia) and Board Member of PBU, will be awarded the G.B Biette International Award at the 2nd International Symposium on Low Vision Rehabilitation and Visual Ability, which is organized by IAPB Italy, and will take place in December 2010.

    Manal Bouhaimed MD wins AAO secretariat award

    MEACO Head of Ethics committee Dr. Manal Bouhaimed will be awarded the AAO secretariat award at the forthcoming AAO-MEACO Joint Meeting taking place in Chicago October 16 - 19, 2010. The Secretariat Award recognizes ophthalmologists for special contributions to the Academy and ophthalmology. Manal was nominated by the Secretary for Member Services for her role as advisor to the Membership Advisory Committee. Manal is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Medical Ethics at Kuwait University. MEACO hereby congratulates Manal on this achievement.
